Framed Vintage Sports Wall Art
Few concepts are as deeply engrained in the American psyche as sports. Around the world, games and the athletes that define them are venerated and exalted as cultural icons, paragons of beloved qualities and homeland patriotism. And in America particularly, the men and women that appear in framed vintage sports posters on the walls of sports bars, diners, and family dens are the stuff of legend.
From photographs of famous historical athletes to advertising posters for venues and sponsors and manufacturers to sporting magazine covers and handbills for renowned events, the wide array of framed vintage sports posters offers an artistic spin on nearly everyone’s favorite aspect of various pastimes. Even various paintings find their way into the genre—famous illustrators like Norman Rockwell often incorporated sports into their paintings. Rockwell’s “Ski Skills” is a particularly endearing example.
For those with a more historical devotion to the sports world, there are framed vintage sports posters frequently made of great moments in sporting history. A stunning black and white photograph entitled “Babe Bows Out - 1948” captures with silent awe the melancholy and reverence of the great legend’s departure from the game. Photographer Nat Fein immortalized this and other significant moments and figures with a brilliant eye. “Jackie Robinson Stealing Home, May 15, 1952” is another such photograph that perfectly immobilizes the action of a famous player in action. To see such a well – crafted photograph is almost like being transported back in time to the stadium itself.
And there are many other works that do the same. Lou Gehrig, Yogi Berra, Honus Wagner – all these and more exist still in the memories of devoted fans and in the stunning imagery of sports photography.
