Framed Celebrity Pop Prints
Pop art often concerns itself with the ephemeral, transient nature of its subjects, and sometimes even with its representation choices. It is no surprise, then, that framed celebrity pop art makes up some of the most iconic pieces in the pop art canon. Since celebrity can be fleeting, the pop art approach is a natural fit to portray celebrities.
Andy Warhol is the undisputed king of framed celebrity pop art pictures. People who don’t know much about pop art, or even art in general, are frequently familiar with works of Warhol’s such as “Marilyn Diptych.” The style used in that work has been copied numerous times and even parodied on occasion. The celebrities he often portrayed are iconic in their own right, but his techniques of using exaggerated and shifted color schemes in works such as “Double Elvis” and “Blackglama (Judy Garland)” both adds to these celebrities’ legends and enshrines Warhol in the cultural pantheon with his subjects.
The tradition of framed celebrity pop art paintings continues today with paintings like Shepard Fairey’s iconic portrayal of Barack Obama in “Hope.” His use of a serene-looking Obama combined with Warhol’s color shifting approach, as well as the choice of a red, white, and blue color palette made the image an instant sensation.
One can spot a variety of influences at work in framed celebrity pop art pieces. Although Roy Lichtenstein’s “Marilyn Monroe” is not nearly as famous as Warhol’s portrayals of the actress, Lichtenstein’s work is an excellent example of the influence of comic book styles so prevalent in his work. Lichtenstein’s style is another one that is frequently copied by many budding artists.
