Framed Provence Art

The Romans were the first ones to colonize the land and they’ve left their mark on the province, as Provence has a distinct linguistic and cultural identity after all these centuries. For some all the reason, artists have been fascinated by this land for just as long, with the first paintings depicting seals, horses and bisons. Only a fraction of them are featured in Framed Provence Art, but they can be admired on the walls of the world-famous Cosquer Cave, in the proximity of Marseille.

The structures erected over the course of centuries are just as fascinating, with the interiors of the Frejus Cathedral being a shining example. Framed Provence Art includes these biblical scenes as well as the images envisioned by important painters who lived in this area, such as Nicolas Forment or Louis Brea. Not all of the paintings are closely related to religion and just as many artists found it worthwhile to focus on the natural beauty of Provence, its rolling hills and seemingly endless fields of flowers.
