T Allom (born 1804) was born in Lambeth. He inspired many artists during his lifetime and even today many new artists look at his art as a source of inspiration. He had a life long ambition to become a professional artist, and directed all his energy towards achieving this dream. He was lucky that he grew up in an environment in which his talent was discovered early, nurtured and supported by those who appreciated his efforts. At the age of 15 years, he was apprenticed to architect Goodwin Francis for whom he worked for 7 years, after which he joined the Royal Academy School for his studies. He managed to achieve this dream in such a manner that he was able to launch an international market for his originals and reproductions. Allom was an architect, a topographical illustrator and an artist. In his lifetime, he designed many Victorian churches, and was also the founding member of the Royal Institute of British Architects. Allom produced some book illustrations mostly after the works of other architects or artists. His main intention was to gain a wider audience. He later on offered some single-issue lithographs for sale, and some lithotints of celebrations, events and topographical views. His works continue to attract the attention of many viewers and today, framed T Allom art can be seen adorning the walls of many buildings around the world. He based his finished oil paintings and watercolors mainly on his topographical designs. He worked on numerous projects with Sir Charles Barry, the most notable being the Houses of Parliament.
